In the past, people toasted Saint John with wine served in clay bowls — a tradition of sharing that can still be seen in working-class neighborhoods today.
And in Lisbon? During the Festas de Santo António, it was traditional to offer wine to the saint as a way of asking for protection for the vineyards and good harvests. Many festivals had the habit of serving red wine in clay bowls — a symbol of sharing and popular communion.
